The
valiant Hanuman crossed the enormous ocean and observed the city of Lanka
located on the peak of Thrikooda. The
powerful Hanuman stood with the heap of flowers on his body, after crossing the
hundred Yojana across the vast ocean; he remained enthusiastic without any
weariness. He moved through the woods of
fresh fragrances, lawns and hills and stood on the top of the hill closely
watching the woods and gardens located in the city of Lanka. The fearless Hanuman witnessed numerous
woods, Saralan/ pine, Karnikaras, Kharjura/date palm, fully blossomed Priyalas,
muchulindas/lemon,Kudajan/wild jasmine, Ketaka/mogra, Priyangun/long pepper
full of alluring fragrances, Kadamba, Bananas, Asana, Kovidara, Karavira, fully
blossomed trees hanging down to earth with the heaviness of its flowers and
buds, birds were flying on top of it and the bunch of flowers were moving in
gentle breeze, wells, ponds and streams were filled with duck and swan, and
numerous pleasure gardens were crammed with attractive fruits and flowers. The glorious city of Lanka had the
resemblance of heaven, the abode of deities.
It was embellished with various alluring flowers of lotuses and
water-lilies, it was well guarded by the dreadful demons around the huge golden
wall, it has gigantic mansions and its royal pathways were decorated with
flags. Hanuman observed the attractive
city of Lanka ruled by King Ravana, which was constructed by Vishwakarma, it has striking huge buildings located on the
mountain, gave out an appearance of floating in the sky; his imagination ran
wild about the beautiful city with its stunning enclosures, archways, mansions
etc… and arrived at the northern gate.
The city of Lanka has the resemblance of Mount Kailas, it has attractive
mansions guarded by the alarming demons and serpents like the city of
Bhogavathi, it was incomparable beautiful city of Lord Kubera in earlier days, it
was well secured by the appalling demons and serpents of sharp teeth with
fierce weapons on their hands, Hanuman realized the valor and deviousness of
Ravana after witnessing the powerful protection measures in the city of Lanka, which was impossible to
conquer for Vanaras or deities. Hanuman immersed
in various thoughts and wondered what Rama with mighty arms would do after
crossing the unfathomable ocean; definitely it will be a difficult task to
persuade the monstrous demons or battle against them and only four Vanaras can
cross the mighty ocean which was himself, Vali, Nila and Sugriva. Hanuman, who always thinks of the welfare of
Rama decided to find Goddess Sita, daughter of King Janaka, thought that it
will be impossible to enter the city of Lanka which is guarded by dreadful
demons who possessed great extraordinary prowess. He looked at the glorious city of Lanka which
is impossible to conquer even by the deities or demons, decided to enter the
city with his small form during the dark hours.
Hanuman engaged in various thoughts like how can I search for Sita,
daughter of Janaka without the knowledge of dreadful demons? How can I execute
the task of Rama without destroying it? How can I meet Sita without the
awareness of demons? A messenger with unsteady and unclear mind in a wrong
place and time would destroy the task, just like the daylight removes the
darkness. An intelligent messenger with
the persistent thought of gain or loss will not shine, a messenger praised
abundantly by the scholarly will not perform the task well due to arrogance, and
therefore how can I perform the task without destroying it? How can I keep my
mind out of dreariness? How can I perform the task without risking crossing of
ocean? If I have found by the demons, all those tasks of Rama will definitely
go waste. It seems to be impossible to
enter the city of Lanka even in the form of a demon and even the wind cannot
enter without the knowledge of Rakshasas.
Hanuman thought it would be difficult for him to remain in original
form, decided to assume a small form and enter into the city of Lanka in the
dark hours, by conducting meticulous search in the mansions of Ravana would
help to find Sita, and waited until the nightfall. He reduced his body size into a cat and
entered into the path ways of the beautiful city, observed the stunning huge
mansions decked with crystals, gold and pearls, with golden pillars and
windows, which has the resemblance of city of Gandharvas. The mansions of demons were decked with
precious gems and pearls, golden archways and the streets were well decorated. After witnessing the grandeur of the City of
Lanka ruled by Ravana, its fame and magnificent mansions of expensive materials
and gems and it was guarded by appalling demons Hanuman became gloomy thinking
of weak prospect of capturing the powerful city of Lanka, but he was happy and
eager to meet Sita. Gradually moon rose
in the sky with thousands of lights as though assisting Hanuman in performing
the task of Rama, it was like a swan swimming on the lake of gleaming lights.
