Sage Shathananda continued “ The
illustrious Sage Vishwamithra who was aware of the devastation of hundred sons
of Sage Vashishta and Mahodhaya through his ascetic power, in the midst of Sages assembled began to speak
“ King Thrishanku from Ikshvaku Dynasty is well known for his righteous deeds,
approached me with an yearning to attain heavenly abode with his mortal
body. Therefore, scholars assembled here
should conduct an appropriate Vedic – ritual that would fulfil the desire of
King Thrishanku.” The sages and scholars
assembled were begun to discuss about the Vedic ritual prescribed in the
scriptures, they had uneasiness about the ritual which is worthless, they were
aware of the wrath of Sage Vishwamithra, whatever he says should be carried out
sincerely, otherwise Son of Kushi is
similar to ritual fire will not hesitate to curse. Ultimately, the Sages assembled were decided
to perform the Vedic ritual which would ascend King Thrishanku to heavenly
abode with his mortal body by the supreme ascetic power of Sage Vishwamithra. The proceedings of the Yagna was begun, Sage
Vishwamithra was seated as the principal officiator of Vedic-ritual. All the ceremonies were carried out according
to the scriptures, those who were well versed in the recitation of hymns were
performed their duties meticulously.
Sage Vishwamithra offered oblations to the ritual fire and appealed to
the deities to accept the same, unfortunately none of the deities appeared to
accept the oblations. The most
infuriated Sage raised the Yagna spatula and spoke to King Thrishanku “ Oh!
Nareshwara, You will experience the supreme ascetic powers of mine, that will
help you to ascend to the heavenly abode with your mortal body, fruits of my
asceticism will definitely pay reward and you will begin your journey to heaven
with the prowess of my asceticism.” As
everyone was witnessing, King Thrishanku raised to heaven with his mortal body. Lord Indra, slayer of demon Paka witnessed
the arrival of King Thrishanku to his abode, Lord Indira with all the deities said
“ Oh! King Thrishanku, you are not deserved to be here; therefore you have to
retrace your footsteps. You have been
rejected by Sage Vashishta, you have assumed the form of a profaner due to the
curse of your mentor, so you will be going head down to Earth, in the reverse
order.” King Thrishanku fell down on the
Earth calling out for Sage Vishwamithra who was in a rage ordered King
Thrishanku to pause, resplendent Sage
Vishwamithra like a Prajapathi created a pathway to southern direction and
created a replica of world of planets and Saptharishi Mandal, in this way he
confronted Lord Indra. In an extreme
fury, Sage Vishwamithra created a replica of a Universe without Lord Indra,
further prepared to create imitation of the deities as well. The deities were startled, all the deities
and demons approached Sage Vishwamithra and appealed “ King Thrishanku was
cursed by his preceptor, the supreme ascetic Sage Vashishta hence it is
impossible for him to attain heavenly abode.” Sage Vishwamithra spoke “ I have
promised King Thrisanku that I will make fulfill his desire to attain heavenly
abode with his mortal body. I cannot
make my promise to become fallacious, therefore let my creation remains as long
the world exists and it will be appropriate for all the deities to agree with
this arrangement.” All the deities replied in chorus “ Oh! Munipungava/eminent
Sage, all that you have created will remain intact, the stars will remain in
their respective places and King Thrishanku will reside in the circle of stars
with his head down towards Earth and Lord Indra will be gleaming like any other
star. All these stars would
circumambulate the righteous King Thrishanku who had attained his inspiration
fulfilled.” Eventually, supreme ascetic
Sage Vishwamithra agreed to the verdict of the deities and returned to his
hermitage.”
