Sage Vishwamithra narrated “Lord
Brahma and the deities left to their heavenly abode. King Bhageeratha continued severe austerities
standing on the tip of the big toe praying to Lord Shiva, in this way the
penance continued for one year, eventually the Lord Shiva who is Lord of all
the living creatures/Pashupathi, consort of Goddess Sri Uma appeared before the
King and spoke “ Oh! Narashreshta, I am extremely pleased at your devotion and
I am prepared to hold the water current of River Ganga, daughter of mount
Himavan on my hair locks and fulfill your desire.” Shortly, the elder daughter of Mount Himavan
who is revered by the entire Universe assumed intolerable water current and
plunged into the auspicious matted hair locks of Lord Shiva, impatiently
uttering her urgency to enter into the netherworlds thrashing the matted hair
locks of Lord Shiva, which infuriated Lord Shiva and detained her in his matted
hair locks. Consequently, River Ganga
whirled round and round in the matted hair lock of Lord Shiva for many years
and remained immobile, King Bhageeratha once again underwent severe penance
praying to Lord Shiva for descend River Ganga on Earth. Oh! Raghunandana, Lord Shiva was immensely
pleased at the devotion and dedication of King Bhageeratha, eventually released
River Ganga in Bindusaras on Mount Himalayas, which streamed out in seven water
courses namely Haladhini, Pavani, Nalini, Suchakshu, Sita, Sindu and Ganga
followed the path of King Bhageeratha’s chariot who was majestically seated on
the grand chariot. In this way, river
Ganga from heaven descend on the Earth from the matted hair locks of Lord
Shiva, creating tumultuous noise streaming with full of aquatic creatures on
Vasundhara/Earth, was admiringly witnessed by the deities, Sages, Siddhas,
Yakshas and Gandharvas. All the deities
were present with their various grand celestial vehicles witnessed the highest
marvel of sliding of River Ganga which is the source of life and salvation on
Earth. The deities decked in various precious
gems and jewels were created an illusion in the cloudless sky shines with
hundreds of Aditya. The streaming river Ganga with full of aquatic animals,
splash of glaciers stippled as swans created resemblance of autumn, by
spreading silver clouds on the sky, flawless river Ganga from the heaven swooped
on the matted hair locks of Lord Shiva was streaming down with her strong water
current creating numerous water ways on the land. This glorious water from the matted hair
locks of Lord Shiva was reverentially consumed by the Siddhas, Sages,
Gandharvas and residents of the Earth, whoever fallen with the water current of
river Ganga took bath on the holy river became sinless and returned to their
respective worlds. The people who
undertook holy bath on the unblemished river Ganga were released from the
clutches of the chain of sins and remained blissful. In this way, King Bhageeratha majestically
seated on the grand chariot was followed by the glorious river Ganga, deities,
Rishi Ganas, Dhaithyas, Dhanavas, Rakshasas, Gandharva, Yaksha, Pravara, Kinnara,
Mahauraga, Sarpa, Apsaras etc.. She
sincerely followed King Bhageeratha all the way, flooding the arena of grand Vedic
ritual of Sage Jahnu made the sage extremely annoyed; he consumed the entire
water of River Ganga. All the deities,
sages and Gandharvas earnestly prayed to Sage Jahnu to release the holy river,
eventually River Ganga was released through the ears of prominent Sage was
attained his daughter hood was gloriously known as Jahnavi. The glorious river Ganga followed King
Bhageeratha to the netherworld through the path ways already created by the
sons of Emperor Sagara, was soaked the mound of ashes of sixty thousand sons of
Emperor Sagara were cleansed and attained the heavenly abode.”
