Sumantra, charioteer of King
Dasaratha narrates the proficiency of Sage Rishyashrunga whose visit to the
city of Ayodhya would bring auspiciousness to the people and its land, so he
requests the King to invite the Sage for performing the Vedic rituals. Further Sumantra explains the legend he had
heard from Sanathkumara who predicted about the arrival of sons of King Dasaratha.
Sanathkumara described about Sage
Rishyashrunga who was born to Sage Vibhandhaga, son of Sage Kashyapa. Sage Rishyashrunga was grown up in woodlands,
an absolute knower of Brahmam, was a truly ascetic has taken the Brahmanical
vow of Vrathithva and Prajapathya and was sincere follower of his father
Vibhandhaga. He was well known for his
celibacy, he was always praised for his virtues by Brahmins. There was a King Romapadha ruled the city of
Anga lost all his glories due to his immoral behavior his kingdom was engulfed with
acute famine and poverty. Soon, King Romapadha sought the advice of the
Vedic scholars to resolve this critical situation by performing Vedic rituals, in
that way get rid of the sin he has committed.
The Vedic Scholars and Brahmins suggested the King to invite
Rishyashrunga son of Sage Vibhandhaga who could bring solution to the matter. They advised the King Romapadha to bring the
ascetic Sage Rishyashrunga to the palace with all honor and give away his
daughter Shanta in marriage to him. King
Romapadha was become too anxious about how to bring a true ascetic to palace
and get him married to his daughter. He
ordered his ministers to bring Sage Rishyashrunga to the palace, the deities
were pleased at the arrival of Sage caused outpour, eventually Princess Shanta
who was related as daughter to King Dasaratha was married to Sage
Rishyashrunga. Thus Sanathkumara
narrated the saga of Sage Rishyashrunga to the Sages was retold by Sumantra to
King Dasaratha.
