Illustrious Sage Valmiki describes the miserable state of King Dasaratha , righteous ruler of Ikshvaku dynasty due to lack of progeny.  The deeply distressed King Dasaratha thought of performing a Yaga/fire sacrifice to beget virtuous offspring.  King Dasaratha ordered Sumantra to inform all the Acharyas and sagacious members of the assembly and Suyajna, Vamadeva, Jabali, Kashyapa , Sage Vashishta and prominent Vedic scholars were duly informed by Sumantra.  King Dasaratha addressed the assembly with utmost reverence ‘My mind is totally disturbed due to the lack of progeny and I wish to conduct an Ashwamedha Yaga as prescribed in the scriptures ’.  The Brahmin scholars and Sage Vashishta strongly supported and blessed the very idea of King Dasaratha.  The entire ministers of assembly were rejoiced over the decision of King Dasaratha and as an initiation of the Yaga King Dasaratha advised to release the ritual-horse.  All the scholars assembled were praised the righteous deed of King Dasaratha and blessed him to attain virtuous progeny; eventually it was decided to organize a grand Yaga arena on the river banks of Sarayu.  King Dasaratha was delighted at the turn of events and ordered his ministers to obtain the requirements for the Yaga as advised by the Vedic scholars.  King Dasaratha ordered to arrange a Yaga arena on the river banks of Sarayu and release the ritual-horse accompanied by mighty warriors and scholars to monitor the movement of it, he desired to conduct the ceremony without any error, strictly bond to the rules prescribed in the scriptures to bring peace and prosperity and obtain fruitful result as well.  King Dasaratha cautioned the Vedic scholars to remain extremely watchful during the entire process of Yaga, because the demons may create impediments to it, also advised the proficient scholars of the assembly to conduct and conclude the rituals according to the rules prescribed in the scriptures.  The Vedic scholars assured the King that all the proceedings of the Yaga will be conducted faultlessly as always and left the assembly.  King Dasaratha entered the chamber of his wives and informed them about the auspicious Yaga performance to obtain virtuous offspring, therefore he advised them to undertake severe austerities throughout the entire proceedings.  This propitious information brought marvelous sparkling on the faces of queens which has the resemblances of full bloom lotuses.
